Does anyone have experience with medications that curb addiction?
There are some new pharmaceuticals on the market that will stop the cravings that addictive drugs cause. For example, cocaine will affect the primitive pleasure and reward center of the brain causing a person to seek out the drug at the expense of rational goals. These new meds are supposed to short circuit that link allowing a person to make rational decisions and to “choose” to quit. Has anyone had any experience with these meds either as a therapist or an addict?
Nothing has been approved at this time. I do FDA research.
There have been things like Antibuse for alcohol. It will make you really sick if you drink while you are on it. The only problem is that people stop taking the medication so they can drink.
Right now the only thing you can do is to stop using all together and join a support group like Narcotics Anonymous. http://www.na.org/ The cravings go away with time.
